He trained as an organ builder during the years 1723 – 1727 with Daniel Valachy sen. in Banská Bystrica. From 1730 he worked independently as an organ builder and manufacturer of musical instruments. In 1736 he became a burgher of Banská Bystrica. After his son Michal had trained with him as an organ builder, they worked together.
Martin Podkonický built a large number of instruments – from 4-register positives to two-manual organs – especially in the areas of Banská Bystrica, Orava, Spiš, Liptov and Novohrad. In exceptional cases he worked also on the territory of present-day Hungary. His instruments were distinguished by thoroughgoing elaboration and high-quality materials.
